Top-line revenue growth has become a challenge for telecoms operators across Asia ever since the market for basic connectivity services became saturated. However, the deployment of 5G networks – and the transformation of operators’ networks and IT systems – has given the industry some confidence in its ability to leverage new technologies to build new products and services and new revenue streams. Asia's position as the most technologically advanced market globally means many western CSPs are looking to Asia for best practice and transformational inspiration, especially around 5G.
This research assesses the success that 22 of Asia’s largest telecoms operator groups have had in the period 2018-2021 in developing new lines of business and new revenues. Research is based on a detailed analysis of operators’ financial results and an assessment of their strategies for expanding into new markets such as IoT, cloud, security and IT services as well as new consumer services including smart home and mobile payments.
